The festival begins every year on July 7th at 8AM when thousands of people gather for the sound of the rocket launch and the first Bull Run in the town square. The celebration lasts exactly one week and ends with the last Bull Run on July 14th at 8AM.
This religious bullfighting festival, dating all the way back to the 14th century, is a large celebration or fiesta with music, dancing, drinking, fireworks, street theater, human cannonballs, and circus animals.
The San Fermin Festival has always been a special, populous event in Spain, but was only introduced to the world through its most passionate supporter, the American writer Ernest Hemingway. In 1926, Hemingway published The Sun Also Rises and told the world about the event and suddenly people from all over the world came to Pamplona to see it. Now the area has a large overcrowding problem in July and hotel bookings are required months in advance.
